Promising Futures Overview

Promising Futures is an exclusively grant funded Washington, DC-based youth development
pipeline of urban youth.

This community-based program prides itself on activating the positive youth development of its
members and building their social and political capital
(in the form of agency) to navigate adolescence as
they transition into adulthood. From 2011-2014, the pipeline secured memorandums of agreement (MOAs) with over 25 youth serving community based agencies, was vetted as an approved community provider within
the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS),
trained 35 youth representing five DCPS and public charter schools as Peer Educators, had 62 middle school youth matriculate through its after-school curriculum and served up to 900 youth through street outreach, performance-based workshops/events and youth ‘teach-back’ trainings.

Youth Development Pipeline

• AMBASSADORS - are youth ages 11-18 engaged in a curriculum based program co-facilitated by peer educators and youth builders. Since inception in 2011, 265 youth have been reached at Roots Public Charter School, Washington Middle School for Girls, Ophelia Egypt Program Center, Ballou High School, and Washington Metropolitan High School.
• PEER EDUCATORS - are youth ages 14-18 who use performing art ‘edutainment’ techniques for workshops and city-wide campaigns to engage their peers in critical dialogue on relevant social issues. Since its inception in 2010, 45 youth have served as peer educators. 100% of peer educators have graduated from high school and gone on to four year colleges/universities such as GW, St. Johns, Bucknell, Univ of Wisconsin, Howard, St. Francis, Old Dominion, Hampton, Virginia Commonwealth, UDC, Trinity and Clark Atlanta Universities.
• YOUTH BUILDERS - are college and graduate level students who coach and mentor the ambassadors and peer educators through trainings, co-facilitation and evaluation projects. Some youth builders earn practicum credit as MPH students from GW and Univ of Maryland.
